From Latin oecūmenicus, from Ancient Greek οἰκουμενικός (oikoumenikós, “concerning ἡ οἰκουμένη (hē oikouménē, “the inhabited (earth)”)”, “the whole (known) world”). Cognate with French œcuménique. By surface analysis, ecumene + -ic.
